another new year's post
i cut my hair today. this isn't unusual. my hair is long enough to do regular trimmings and such on my own. i try to time it once a month with the full moon, or new moon if i forget. it's not a superstition thing; moon cycles are just easy to remember.
speaking of moon, this kind of another retrospective "new year's" post since i started this (and published) on lunar new year. january, february, and march have different "new year's" feels to them--new year's day, lunar new year, the spring equinox, respectively. i don't have anything to reflect on other than noting this time of year is a time of reflecting. the "new year" doesn't feel like the "new year" until way after january. whenever i start writing 2026 instead of 2025, that's when the new year is here. that's usually the stretch from lunar new year into spring, anyways.
new year's day is winter in the northern hemisphere. winter still feels like resting time. january is a big stretch after waking up, and falling back to sleep for another hour. new year's day is just a formality. february is when frost dresses down into dew. still sweater weather, but you can entertain showing leg and having your hair down instead of up. ice melts and the trees are budding soon enough, but not just yet. the final boarding call for ushering in the new year is the spring equinox, in march, as if equalizing days and nights aren't a loud enough alarm.
i got really frustrated at my haircut today because i have to have some parts be uncomfortably short. this is so my hair can be more "lived in" as it grows out. sometimes, that means fixing parts i cut too short accidentally, to my chagrin. if this stretch of "new year's" tell me anything, it's that you can always start over, and sometimes that just looks like sitting with fringe that is guaranteed to be a pernicious cowlick soon (but, thankfully, is able to be tucked behind the ears for now). i do like haircuts that don't lose charm with growth, after all.
until the next trim,
