my varnished soapbox

march 2025 listening history

this post has been sitting in my drafts since april fools' day. just going down the line, compared to last month's list, not much has changed. that doesn't mean i didn't do anything, though.

i did spend a disgusting amount of time writing about cigarettes after sex, probably the most anyone has ever written about them, ever. i already had a couple of their early releases in rotation late-february, and that tapered off a bit into march when i decided to finally finish that post. it was another instance of me writing something as a bit, then i end up taking it very seriously and before i know it, the word count tips over one-thousand. classic me, go figure.

external sunshine deluxe edition dropped, and i shared the experience of the new bonus tracks with a dear friend of mine. she told me new ariana dropped in a tone over text that stopped me in my tracks. that just meant it felt like listening to the album for the first time again when i pressed play. it's the closest i have gotten to putting on a new record in a friend's room and taking in the tunes, or at least my romanticized notion of it in an era of streaming. i remember cd and vinyls playing in my vicinity during much of my formative years, so i conjured this feeling at a distance, one that keeps me close to this same friend who lives in a different timezone.

i also got back to drawing again. sega bodega has some kind of sauce in his beats that keeps me focused and productive in tasks. see, drawings of mine tend to take about 2-5 hours on average to complete, whether or not i space it out between days or whittle away in one sitting. i see drawing in a similar vein as writing for me, in that i would rather do it for fun when i'm inspired, otherwise it feels like work. i did manage to get a commission for my work once, and while that was fun in and of itself, having to log my hours and put a value to my work was not. sega got two drawings out of me in one night, one that was particularly challenging due to skewed perspectives i'm not used to. in spite of that, another dear friend of mine, the subject, was astonished and impressed by my skill. his words of admiration meant a lot to me.

what even was this month? i don't even have a clever title on me today. i just know it was A Month once again, but my takeaways are positive. there are silver linings if you choose to look for them.
